    Kayaking at the Dana Point

We, Beyond Border guys, went to Dana Point, my first (and last) outing this quarter. I really enjoyed the kayaking and took a lot of photos. I was never so close to the sea birds, and I saw some seals at large! You know, it was my first time rowing a canoe in the sea, cool! Then picnic (Michelle turned out to be another great cook), Frisbee, a walk along the Dana Point Beach, and then had some coffee and nice chatting at a fancy cafe at the port under the sunshine. Great weekend.

那么ABx(American Born X)们呢?

BTW,according to my own experience so far, I guess I could understand why many students totally slacked off when they entered ZJU.

zz THE TRUTH ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN SHOW

    From Financial Times

    By Luke Johnson
    Monday, May 21, 2007

There are a lot of misconceptions about those who build companies. The real lives of self-starters are quite different from the impression created in movies, novels or the news media. These fictions discourage some would-be entrepreneurs from giving it a go, and even influence policymakers. So let's debunk some of the most common falsehoods.

Entrepreneurs are motivated by money. In reality they create firms by accident, or because they want to prove themselves, or because they are bored, or have a passion - rather than because they want to get rich. Studies have shown that the short phrase that best sums up the drive of those who create new enterprises is "I'll show them". Money is a way of keeping score and providing capital for the next project - not the prime objective.

The idea is what matters. In fact, execution is everything. We all have brilliant concepts that never come to fruition because they are impractical, or because we are too lazy or distracted. Making it happen is what counts, and this is the difficult bit - which is why so many seemingly clever schemes fail.

Entrepreneurs are born not made. Most successful business owners do not start out very young. They gain experience working for others, and learn how to run an enterprise before venturing out on their own. Just as no one is genetically programmed to be a doctor or an architect, so entrepreneurs tend to find their calling by nurture rather than nature.

Start-ups are one-man bands. Most companies that do well are developed by teams. A prime mover often gets most of the attention - and possibly the rewards - but it is the winning combination of skills formed by a partnership of players that is the most likely formula for success.

Entrepreneurs are inventive geniuses. Very few inventors make it big in business. Rather, those who tend to strike gold are commercially-minded individuals who replicate an original

product and make it cheaper, market it better or watch the costs properly.

Entrepreneurs are mostly academic rejects with no qualifications. Today more and more business owners have university degrees or doctorates. Being an entrepreneur is now a respectable career choice, so more of the educated middle-class have taken the plunge.

Most new businesses fail. Actually the survival rates for companies have been rising in recent years. Only a small proportion of operating enterprises go bust each year - as opposed to inactive limited companies being wound up or struck off, which distorts the statistics. And companies usually fail because of management shortcomings, rather than external forces.

Entrepreneurs are loners. It takes people skills to build a company, and most entrepreneurs are extroverts who enjoy the company of others. They choose to work for themselves because they enjoy the independence, not because they want to hide away from colleagues.

Entrepreneurs have chaotic personal lives. The popular image of an entrepreneur is of someone who has sacrificed everything to make a fortune - including his marriage and family. Elsewhere they are portrayed as playboys with no domestic ties. The truth is that most have a settled home life and stable relationships. The support of a steady partner is needed to help the entrepreneur through the tough times.

Entrepreneurs are gamblers. Yes, they take financial risks, but most are good at judging the downside, and are more cautious in their ventures than it might appear to the uninformed. The vast majority of bankrupts are not entrepreneurs who failed: they are ordinary workers who borrowed too much.

Entrepreneurs are workaholics. While a founder needs to be committed, most work no more hours than ambitious corporate managers. And at least the self-employed can choose their own work patterns. Moreover, surveys show the most stressful aspects of life for staff in big companies are office politics and commuting, things entrepreneurs can largely avoid.

Entrepreneurship is neither as difficult nor as miserable as many people think. Bear this in mind next time you entertain the idea of running your own show.

My comments: I wonder if it applies in China.

    Another week has passed

Really enjoyed the Korean Night. Thank you so much, my friends. I've tagged all of you through Facebook (www.facebook.com). And I guess the Korean girls and boys are better on housework than we Chinese graduates here, ahhh. What's more, I was the driver! Thanks, Hojjact. Before the dinner, some of us talked over some SENSITIVE topics. It appears no governments could, or rather, would like to impose their citizens to an absolutely impartial view in education, especially on history. It makes sense, mainly on the sake of the nation. Personally, I hope there will be more Panda Huggers though I think it is with ulterior motives to mislead too many people to be too optimistic on China and her future.

I created my account on Douban (豆瓣, www.douban.com). Seven groups were tagged at last, Traveler (驴友俱乐部), Movie Fans(爱看电影), Photography (摄影), Douban Fans of ZJU(浙大豆瓣版), What's U.S.A.(美国研究), California Dreams(加州梦), The O.C. I don't think I will spend time on Douban but the name of these seven groups indicate something, or, at least, what I'm interested in, fan of, and wish could spend enough time on. Most people have to focus on their careers; in fact, I'm afraid, for quite a lot of them, it's job not career, it's labor not work. Life is not that easy, especially for the ones from a developing country. Sometimes I wonder if I'd better be an amateurish historian. Maybe more than that, when I needn't worry about every day life any more, launching another life with a fully addicted PhD experience as a beginning. Unfortunately my motto is First Things First; I'm strictly following it so I'm missing many experiences all the time -- I don't believe in any legend on reborn, but I wish there were so that I could experience another life since my birth, which appears attractive, too. But as my belief, there's none. OK, stick to the current one. I never regret, though I complain. Thinking about the butterfly effort (it's amazing, isn't it?), if the girl hadn't sold the second-hand registration form to me on campus and I... then I had missed the TOEFL, and if... too many points I nearly gave up... then I were in China now, losing myself in the buzzy world and wondering what if in America. I know I'm always curious and eager for another further step. Hum, no news from QualComm or the Justice Center, still. OK, come on, next intern interview!

I heard it's the 4th birthday of cc98 (BBS of Computing Center, ZJU). I witnessed her birth, growing and maturing, once my favorite BBS (and then 88). Happy Birthday, cc98! And Happy Birthday, my dear Zhejiang University!

p.s. I just installed Tencent QQ since my Gaim on Ubuntu always crashes and I fail to fix it.

    yc Congratulations from Southern CA

The letter to congratulate ZheDa for its 110th anniversary.

Got my first ticket in US

Unbelievable, less than 24 hours, I was stopped by the police again. Yesterday it was about 15sec after I committed the foul and today less than 2sec; it seemed that the police were waiting for me. This time it was at the crossing of Cornell and Campus Drive. I slowed down but didn't stop at the crossing before the turned right when the traffic light was red. The code was 21453(a) VC RED LIGHT VIOLATION. OK, wait for the judge's summons and prepare for attending the court, Harbor Justice Center, Newport Beach, CA. Oh, my money; oh, my driving/credit record. Anyway, it's not too bad. I guess I will be much more careful since then during driving, and it's safe for me and others.

Recently, I was terribly busy with midterms, project/reports, courses, interview and the horrible Reader/TA's work. Almost no time for learning driving. What's more, former US President Jimmy Carter visited UCI and gave a talk. Unfortunately I was too busy to attend it, otherwise I couldn't be too happy to question him on gun policy and federal welfare system. The same reason for not attending the Bike Walk Protest. And I saw some protesters wish "No Cruel Farming". Still troubled with Time Management. I wrote an email to Eileen about how to be a good CSer; and it's advice for myself, too.

Almost got my first ticket in US

Forgetting to turn on the light when back from Jihao's, soon I found I was being followed by the police car with the lamp glittering! I hurried to stop aside the road and then got out of my car. "No, back to your car." I followed his instruction and the policeman came with his flashlight over me and my car, a small check, I guess. I was ready to receive a ticket that moment. Fortunately, the nice policeman let me go with "Good night." after a few questions. Thank goodness!

    My First Interview in US

I had the phone interview this afternoon, for the BREW Engineering Summer Intern opportunity, QCT, QualComm. The interviewers were very nice and I guessed I did an OK job. Hope I will win the offer. Thanks a lot, guys; thank you so much, Haoboy.

"Those images hit me in the gut..."

The May Day Protest. I first saw it on CNN on TV. Then more details from Internet. It was in Los Angeles! Really shocked, even more terribly for me than the VT tragedy did. I saw well-armed policemen marching in lines against the rally, shooting at arm-less protesters and even journalists. BTW, I found May 1 is a communistic festival not international as it's called in China.

    Quoted from CNN
    • Los Angeles police officers fired 240 rubber bullets into a crowd during immigration marches, officials said.
    • LAPD officers also used batons to push back people in the crowd, including food vendors and journalists.
    • Los Angeles police with riot-control weapons move in to break up a rally Tuesday at MacArthur Park.
    • Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton was critical of the force used by police at an immigration protest.
    • Mayor Villaraigosa cuts short trip to condemn LAPD actions.
    • "Those images hit me in the gut...What happened was wrong, was wrong"
    • Police chief expressed "grave concern," promised full investigation.
    • CNN's Dan Simon reports the FBI will investigate the melee at Los Angeles' MacArthur Park.
